Joseph Brooks Dead: Academy Award Winner Facing Rape Charges Dies Of Apparent Suicide


New York - Joseph Brooks, author of the Oscar-winning of "You light up my life", who was awaiting trial on charges of sexually assaulting more than a dozen women, was found dead Sunday from an apparent suicide in his Manhattan apartment, police said.
He said police spokesman Paul Browne discovered Brooks (73 years) in his apartment at 12:30 Upper East Side from a friend who was planning to eat. Was not immediately clear when his body was there. Police said the apartment door was locked.
Brooks death came five months after the arrest of his son in the case of unrelated, high-level. The boy accused of killing his girlfriend, fashion designer, whose body was found in December in the tub full of flavor in a hotel in Soho.

Joseph Brooks, the Oscar-winning songwriter awaiting trial on sex crime charges, was found dead Sunday of an apparent suicide in his New York City apartment, police say. The 'You Light Up My Life' songwriter, 73, pleaded not guilty to rape, sexual abuse and other charges in 2009.

A police spokesman told reporters that at around 12:30 p.m., a friend found Brooks at his home with a plastic dry-cleaning bag around his head and a towel wrapped around his neck. A helium tank was nearby with a tube connecting it with the bag.

The friend, whose name has not been released, was at the Upper East Side apartment because the two had planned a lunch. The rep, Paul Browne, said an autopsy must be conducted before a cause of death can be determined.
